Did you know that one of the best (and tastiest) ways you can help ease climate crisis is to simply eat vegan? Even one vegan meal per week from your regular eating cycle helps! It sounds crazy, but it’s true!
This is because the production of meat and dairy has huge environmental impacts, including climate-heating emissions, high water use and pollution, and destruction of wildlife and oxygen-giving forests which are being cleared for farming.
To be more specific, statistics show that the global food system is responsible for a third of the total greenhouse gas emissions that drive global warming. Food systems use 70% of the world’s freshwater and cause 80% of the pollution in our rivers, lakes and oceans.
But you can do something about it, simply be eating delicious vegan food.
A recent study by Oxford University in the UK found that vegan diets resulted in a combined 75% less emissions, water pollution and land use than diets in which more than 100g of meat a day was eaten. Furthermore, the study found that vegan diets also cut the destruction of wildlife by 66% and water use by more than half.
Researchers called for governments to put policies in place to help people reduce the amount of meat and dairy they eat in order to meet global climate targets. It’s unlikely that politicians are going to tax the meat and dairy industry heavily, but helping vegan food producers and business serving vegan food, could be a start.
